The Manager Enzo Maresca Describes Lead-Up Time as The 'Most Difficult Two Days' at the Club

Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca stated that the preparation to the weekend's triumph against Everton was "the worst 48 hours" he has experienced at Stamford Bridge.

The Italian delivered a rather mysterious comment in his after-game press conference despite earning a 2-0 win at Stamford Bridge thanks to finishes from Cole Palmer and Malo Gusto.

Those points sent Chelsea once again into the English top flight's top four, perhaps improving the mood following a defeat to Atalanta in the Champions League that had stretched the team's drought without a win to four fixtures.

Yet, when questioned about the full-back's contribution and overall display, Maresca surprisingly shared his displeasure over the previous two days at the organization.

"The way the squad want to develop has been excellent and this is the reason why I commend them - because with so many problems, they are performing admirably after a difficult week," he said.

"From the moment I arrived at the club, the past 48 hours have been the toughest because many people failed to back us."

When pushed further on his meaning, the ex- Leicester City manager added: "Most difficult 48 hours since I joined the club because people failed to back me and the team."

When questioned if he meant people internally at Chelsea, he responded: "Broadly speaking. Overall," before specifying when asked if it was aimed at fans or the press: "I love the fans and we are extremely content with the fans."

Fitness and Suspension Crisis

Maresca also pointed to Chelsea's persistent fitness and suspension problems, noting they had been without star attacker Cole Palmer for a large portion of the campaign, as well as being deprived of linchpin Moises Caicedo to a three-match ban and striker Liam Delap to two serious injuries.

"I truly praise the players and the squad because we have played 16 Premier League games, 5 of them minus Moises Caicedo, eleven of them without Cole Palmer, nearly every one of them without Liam Delap," he said.

"And this squad, no matter who is playing, they are doing fantastic. Today was five games in 12 days so undoubtedly when you see Cole Palmer available, we have said many times that he's our finest player but we play almost all season without our best player.

"We play 5 games in the Premier League minus Moises Caicedo. This is the reason why I'm so happy for the players and it's something that I would want people externally to recognize because the effort from the players is outstanding."

Chelsea's triumph over Everton strengthened their standing in fourth in the Premier League table, with a Carabao Cup quarter-final tie at Cardiff and a league journey to Newcastle scheduled in the coming days.

Speculation Regarding Maresca's Remark

It was unclear what exactly prompted Maresca to label the previous 48 hours as the most difficult of his time as Chelsea manager.

In that window, the Italian had traveled back with his staff and players from his native Italy, held a session at Cobham, attended a pre-match press briefing where he seemed relaxed, and engineered a victory over an high-flying Everton side.

It was unclear whether any specific press stories had unsettled him, if social media discourse were a factor, or if it was something more significant from inside the hierarchy at Stamford Bridge.

Maresca specifically took care to rule out that it was an matter related to the club's supporters, a section of which have still have yet to fully embrace him since his appointment from Leicester in July 2024.
